The Seattle Phonographers attempt to break out of out typical "politburo" style presentation for a more interactive and intimate use of the space. 
Join us as we workshop/ experiment with different ways of improvising with unprocessed field recordings including smaller, localized sound playback setups, real time amplification of existing sound sources, longer duration recordings and other ideas. 

This unique presentation by the SPU pays homage to the late Rolf Julius who passed away on Saturday, January 22nd.

The Seattle Phonographers Union will be performing in Olympia at The Evergreen State College on Friday January 28th. There will be a discussion as well as a performance starting at 7:30pm. We will be playing in COM110 (The Communications Lab, Experimental Theater and Recital Hall building). Hope to see you there!

From north or south:


Take Interstate 5 to Olympia.
Turn onto Highway 101 at Exit 104.
Go west on 101 North for three miles.
Take The Evergreen State College exit.
Go two miles north on the Evergreen Parkway to the main campus entrance (at the roundabout).

The Sounds Of Winter

What are the sounds of winter? The crunch of frost on the lawn. The whoosh of rain coming off bus tires. The sound of silence when it snows. Is winter in the Puget Sound region audibly different from winter elsewhere? The Seattle Phonographers join us once again to explore the sounds and noises of the winter season. Email "Weekday" with your own recordings. With your help we'll create the soundscape of the season. Also, the Seattle Phonographers Union will play a short piece using clips of audio — some of them could be yours!

Does summer in the Puget Sound region sound distinctly different from winter? The Seattle Phonographers Union join us once again to explore the sounds and noises of the summer season. The Seattle Phonographers Union celebrates the release of their eponymous CD, "Seattle Phonographers Union," with two different line-ups of the Union performing each night: Doug Haire, Christopher DeLaurenti, Susie Kozawa, Jonathan Way, and Steve Barsotti on Fri Dec 11 and Heather Perkins, Perri Lynch, Dale Lloyd, Pete Comely, Steve Peters, and Rob Millis on Sat Dec 12.

The Seattle Phonographers Union is a collective of Seattle sound artists who improvise with unprocessed field recordings from around the world. We strive to create compelling juxtapositions of everyday and esoteric

sounds: A flock of pigeons may alight near flowing water and distant temple bells while a long wire fence shimmers and thwaps in the wind.

Each evening opens with a solo set: On Fri Dec 11, Perri Lynch presents Towards Mamori: Field recordings collected from the Mamori Lake region of the Amazon. She combines the nocturnal sounds of insects, tropical birds, river dolphins, frogs, and howler monkeys to explore the strength, fragility, and natural beauty of rain forests near and far. On Sat Dec 12, Christopher DeLaurenti premieres What is Happening in Darfur? along with urban recordings that capture unusual confluences of sound, speech, music, and silence.

Lynch's performance is funded by the City of Seattle CityArtist program while DeLaurenti's set is made possible with support from 4 Culture.
